Our professor gave us a lesson in medieval knights

And taught us

How the ranks ebb forth

From battles to bed,

From private cabins to cleaning schedules

Made for managers and house-maids

In one module

—as long as our love remains—

A state of hierarchy.

So I left the state,

For the black-cat back-door alley street-ways

And hid like a Jew

My palpating body—an outcast

To be held in love so,

Possessed

And placed

In spaces confining both

me and you

you and me

but never us.
