Plato’s anxiety

Plato’s academy by Raphael

I have been waking up
and trying to fine tune the breath
in the belly
before the instrument goes out to play
on office desks
and impostor-ed classrooms.

They tell you
they tell you wrong,
the spirit does not
reside in the shell of the language,
it has to be summoned
in the body
and its word.

I try and breathe
to summon myself.

Fishing

Faeries by a rocky stream by Francis Danby

“In poetry,
I learn honesty.”

There is a certain group of unknown creatures
that sit fishing
over my heart,
like faeries.

These are my mind.

I wheel out my supermarket trolley
and ask them
‘what are we feeling today?’
and when empty,
-Splash-
They dive inside and appear in the nerves of my forehead.

My mother says
‘it is because you are not drinking enough water’
and it must be true
for the pond where they fish
has terrors inside
and we must not let it dry up.

Cotard’s syndrome

The very breath I take

Thins my blood

Into delivering an existence

To the brain

Which does not exist

And so the mirror-image

Shall cease

Because bricolages are no keys

I refuse, I rot, I stop thinking,

Heads turn into tails

And the chair next to my bookshelf

Sighs at last

Calling me to the land of stationary

Where egos go back to their eggs

And I am once again,

More than a language trick.
